Perfect Snow Cone Recipe

Being a nanny means I need to be able to think on my feet. I often have  hard a time coming up with ideas that are fun yet educational for the girls I watch.  The girls are currently interested in baking/cooking which is how we came up with today's recipe. Snow Cones! What could be a better treat on this warm summery day? Here is a simple recipe I doctored up from http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/snow-cone-syrup-ii/detail.aspx. I never follow a recipe completely, I alter it. It's always a hit or miss, but today was a forsure hit !

You will Need :
     For syrup:
  • 1 1/2-2 cups of water
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 3/4 cup of Your choice of powdered drink mix (we used fruit punch)
  • sauce pan (any low pan will work)
*makes about 15 snow cones

      For Snow :
  • 1 cup of ice per snow cone.
  • blender
*makes one snow cone

Creating the Syrup
  1.  First measure out 2 cups of water and pour into sauce pan. Put the sauce pan on the stove to boil.

2. When water comes to a boil, measure out the cup of sugar and stir in until dissolved

 3. When sugar is dissolved , add drink mix and stir in until dissolved

          4. turn down stove temperature to low, and let everything sit for about 10 minutes.
          5. remove from heat,  allow syrup to cool.
          6. refrigerate for for forty-five minutes. (we poured our mix into a beaker , this way it would be
             easy to pour.

Creating the Snow
I myself do not own a snow cone maker, the girls and I created our snow in a blender.

     1. Measure out one cup of ice and pour into blender.

2. Push one of lowest speed settings and chop until power like (we used the blend option)

Snow should look like this.

 3. Next scoop snow into a cup. and retrieve syrup from refrigerator.

4. Pour syrup onto snow ( Tip: it is easier to spoon out than pour. 4-5 tablesspoons is more than enough syrup.)

5. Mix with a spoon and enjoy !

*If you end up with extra syrup, refrigerate in a covered container and continue to use it throughout the summer. The syrup can last up to 6months!)
